Im looking to up my makeup game this summer, so I've got a couple questions of where to go to start. I need a really light foundation that has sun bock, but not too much moisturizer (I have really oily skin and too much of a good thing ain't cute). I've been using Dr. Jart's BB Cream, but it's making my skin too oily throughout the day. I also want to try NARS The Multiple stick for blush and such, but I'm not sure how to apply it correctly. Any tips?

you know i’m gonna suggest you try pure radiant tinted moisturizer! aside from the fact that i respect my employer, i use it every day; i love its buildable (light-to-medium), oil-free formula, which also contains spf 30. admittedly, i tried dr. jart’s bb cream prior to working at nars and found it too sheer with a tendency to disappear as a day wore on.

regarding your second question, the multiple is a multi-use product that can be worn on eyes to create a moisture-rich base for eyeshadow, lips for a delicate tint of color, and cheeks as a cream blush. using it as blush is a great start; for all areas of the face, begin with a light swipe, blend into the skin, and layer on for added color. also note that the matte multiple is for cheeks and lips only; the colors are more intense than the classic multiple but can be applied wet for a delicate tint or dry for higher impact.

hi! I hope you don't mind me asking but how did you end up at nars? If I recall correctly your previous position before glamour mag was something along the lines of library science (?). I apologize if I'm wrong, I've followed you since the beginning of time so I've witnessed how awesome your life becomes on a daily basis (jelly of it all). what you do seems so fun and fulfilling which is where i would love to be in life. any advice on how to get there? xxo

thank you for being interested in my life! since i am always thrilled at the opportunity to talk about myself, it would be my pleasure to do so ;) ;) i’ve also come to love a timeline in my old age, so please see below for a rough sketch of my work life thus far.

  • 2007-2009: this is when i studied for a masters in library science (i also received a certification in conservation, records management, and archival studies). my main focus was digital-based projects, xml, and database research, and interned at marvel comics. it was also when i started this blog.
  • 2009-2010: upon graduating, i realized that i lacked “real world” experience and volunteered to head up the vanderbilt museum's archive. i managed the space and its contents, worked with historians, and transcribing historical materials.
  • 2010-2011: mama (me) had bills to paid and desperately needed to move out of her parents house for her own sanity, so i got a job doing production and coding for an email marketing company with a large retailer as my sole client.
  • 2011-2012: coding got really easy and repetitive and i began increasing the amount of freelance writing i was doing. conde nast took notice and recruited me to be a part of its first community management program, which involved four publications (teen vogue, vanity fair, the new yorker, and glamour). i was assigned to the latter, but after seven months, the program folded.
  • 2012-2014: just when i thought i’d have to eat ramen for the rest of my life, nars cosmetics had an opening on its brand-spanking-new digital team. i am currently able to maintain my blog on the side while handling all of the brand’s digital public relations from a national standpoint as well as create, disseminate, manage, and analyze its social media content. see also: digital strategy.

advice? i try to work hard, never make the same mistake twice, and thank everyone.

i used to have a blog feature called “lip of the day” where i displayed the nars lip i was wearing on a certain day, but i realized it was probably pretty creepy to be scrolling your tumblr dashboard only to come across a massive, brightly-colored pucker, so i’ve transferred it to instagram where i feel it is more appropriately suited. follow me.

the beauty look at yesterday’s naeem khan show, crafted by james boehmer (nars’ director of global artistry) was absolutely stunning. i have no other words to adequately describe it, though “mind-blowing” and “jdklasjdklsajj” come to mind. the lefthand side of kauai duo eyeshadow was applied to lids for a gilded effect in addition to just above the center of the lipline to create a faux ‘cupid’s bow.’ five lip shades — two liners and three lipsticks — created the blood red pout, but boehmer suggested fire down below semi-matte lipstick for a similar look until the products are launched in the fall.
