to be honest, i haven’t; i’m single and have been single the entire time i’ve lived here. i have a full-time job and tend to fill my nights with events and catching up with friends, so dating hasn’t been a priority, but i would love to do more of it. oh, and the “being fabulous” part? i try to do that all the time, regardless of my status ;)

Hello, since you're someone who knows the city pretty well I really want to ask you this question. What areas of New York would you suggest to someone who is looking to move to the city to a safe neighborhood and not have to break a whole paycheck on rent? Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I really want the opinion of someone who knows the city well enough and lives there. Thank you!

this is the farthest thing from a dumb question! it is a question that many people should ask themselves before moving to a new (expensive!) city, so i commend you for reaching out. keep in mind that many good rentals will require a broker’s fee. here are my suggestions for fairly affordable options in the new york city area:

queens: astoria, long island city, woodside, forest hills
brooklyn: greenpoint, fort greene, carroll gardens, boerum hill, cobble hill
manhattan: morningside heights, carnegie hill, manhattan valley

I need to find boots for fall (preferably in a dark-ish brown) and I'm wanting to go to about knee length. Only problem? I have big calves and tiny feet. Do you know of a good place I can find wide width calve boots that come in a size 5 1/2? Also, do you know what the difference between W and WW is in boots? I've googled it a million times it seems and everything says something else. Thanks for the help! Your blog is AMAZING!

thank you so much! giving all the credit to my friend nicolette, i have been turned on to duo boots. the brand supplies a variety of footwear styles from calf size 30 to 50. regarding wide (w) and double wide (ww), that refers to your foot shape and not your calf size…i’m not sure what the difference is between the two, though.

since arizona is warm, let your accessories do the talking. assuming that your dress is a solid green, choose footwear and a purse in a contrasting color such as blue or purple. add unique, but not too detailed jewelry like cuffs and a large necklace or earrings.

gold cuff bracelets (asos, $27)
a unique clutch (samudra, $95)
your green dress
a neutral, bib necklace (house of fraser, $25)
heels that match the clutch (nine west, $89)

Hello! I'm an English major and read a while back that you went to grad school for Lib. Science. I've been thinking more and more about grad school to work towards Lib. Sciences because, like you, I love learning and reading. My question is, if you don't mind me asking a personal question, how bad were/are the loans? Did you find it hard looking for a job? i went to a city school, so the total funds were only around 10k. disclosure: my parents laid out the money like saints and i am still paying them off. because i wanted to work in a museum rather than a public library, i learned that most jobs are funded by grants; unfortunately, an opening rarely exists if no one has applied for a grant to create it. i worked unpaid for almost a year as the head of a local museum archive and when i got tired of being poor and living with my parents, i decided to change careers. i hope to eventually get back into the field, but i wasn’t willing to work under those conditions at the time. that isn’t to say that it will be the same for you, though. good luck!

How do you feel about bright tights with open-toed black heels? Too out there? I'm just not sure if I can do it but I'm tempted.

no way! i am a big advocate for experimentation, so i say if you’re tempted, go for it. if you do choose to wear an eye-catching pair of tights, temper the brightness by staying within the same color palette or focusing on neutrals.

today, i came home to a little surprise from miriam, one half of the designer duo that makes up jewelry line mimi vert. her line was created with the help of friend ilias and the name is a combination of miriam’s childhood nickname, mimi, and the french word for “green.” each item features a small green eye, which started as a simple picture of miriam’s eye and eventually became the logo for the brand. the first pieces were made in silver and gold and were produced in limited quantities in their home studio.

i was particularly drawn to the necklace above; the feminine, cartoon-y version of a royal crest is part of the medieval-inspired jeanne d’arc collection.

and here’s the rest of the ann taylor summer 2012 collection. there was a bright burst of wearable neon, a palette of sunset-colored grecian gowns, and an updated collection of separates for work. “updated” as in, this ain’t your mom’s separates; every piece of white and black clothing was mix and matchable, which is imperative when creating a conservative office wardrobe. the final section was, in my opinion, one of the most important. it was full of nautical resort pieces, but also ann’s very first swimwear line. i will definitely be checking out the retro-inspired suits when they land in stores.
