the next installation at gap’s rotating concept space, next to the flagship store on 54th street, will promote the chain’s spring cardigan. next to a bright selection of the brand’s in-house-designed pieces will be a selection of more creative takes on the classic, designed by 30 rhode island school of design students.

the result ranges from simple to innovative; one student deconstructed sweaters to make dresses and skirts. another used bleach to create a motif of birds sitting on a branch. priced at $68 each, they will be available starting friday. alongside the students’ work, the shop will additionally sell cardigans for $44 each in a range of bright and bold spring colors in stripes and solids.

creative director patrick robinson explainedthat they need to think outside of the box and focus on emerging designers. though the names of the students involved have not been mentioned, prices will cost over 50% more than usual, which may help the chain recover from the past eleven months of sales declines.
