father zucker always says to “cover your ass.” basically, never count on anyone else to do something for you; work hard, do it yourself, and document it. my grandmother also passed along the kind-of-depressing-if-you-think-about-it advice that “books are your best friend.” books never let you down, they’re always around for a laugh/good cry/thoughtful admonition. maybe this is why i became a librarian!
