anotherrpage asked:

So I have been following you for awhile now. But no matter how much I like your tumblr- I find it disheartening when you ask to be recommended- mainly because you get irritated when people ask you to "promote" their blog- or how to promote- you once responded that you have never tried to get your blog out there like that- well if you ask to be recommended, what do you think that is? Because to me it is trying to get your blog out there? That is an oxymoron and being a somewhat of a hypocrite. I have never and will never ask to be promoted- I am not here for that. It is just really disappointing. Perhaps you can help me understand something that I am not seeing that makes this different. Because to me, if you didn't care about your blog getting out there, you wouldn't ask to be recommend- you would let your followers make that decision for themselves. I am not trying to be rude, I know it may sound that way, but this is frustrating to me when I have seen you be somewhat rude to people that ask to be promoted, you actually said you won't even respond to those people- the ones that ask how you got your blog out there.

i am sorry to have disappointed and/or confused you. i do agree that, yes, it is a bit hypocritical that i participate in tumblr tuesday. and while you were not rude in questioning my intentions, i do not feel that i was being rude in my statement about blog promotion. intonation and expression are almost always lost via the internet and i think that my response was taken out of context: when you are frequently left with comments of “follow me” or “tell people to check out my blog,” there is no appropriate response. i could follow them or check out their blog, true, but what if i am not attracted? does that make me a terrible person? if i give advice, am i saying that i am a better blogger than they are? i surely am not. instead, i sometimes opt to ignore the request because i would rather ignore it than have my words misconstrued. in regards to self-promotion, i wrote that “i have never promoted my blog or networked off of tumblr or added features just to grab the attention of an audience.” i am a huge advocate for the tumblr community — i tell everyone i know to join and freely recommend my favorites — so if attempting to gain the same response within the site is wrong, then i don’t want to be right. and by suggesting that i be recommended, i am in no way forcing someone to do my bidding. it is just that: a suggestion.

side note: i e-mailed a-dom, who had asked the original question about how to improve her blog, in an attempt to further explain my answer and apologize if my response was misunderstood. it went unanswered, though i still look forward to continuing my conversation with her. (her blog looks great. check it out.)
