interview: jewelry designer cassy saba

pre-fashion week, i had the opportunity to touch base with cassy saba, an extremely talented jewelry designer who has been creating works of wearable (and affordable!) art since 2003 [at the tender age of 10]. her pieces have been worn such celebrities as jordin sparks, beyonce knowles, brandy and alicia keys. saba may be young, but her jewelry definitely belies her age.

what is your most prized accessory? my favorite piece i ever designed was a “sleeping beauty” (rare turquoise) two-strand necklace accented with crystals. it is the necklace i wore on the montel williams show. i swore i would never sell it, but someone saw the show and loved it so much i couldn’t pass it up!

are there any underlying themes to your collections? i actually have many different themes to my collections (ex. beach bombshell, crystal craze, etc.). i try to have similar elements with each collection, yet keep them unique to their own style. most of my clients have pieces from each collection because they want variety with their jewelry. my jewelry offers something for all generations and every particular style. since i also design custom work, i have many price ranges.

do you have a process prior to starting a new collection? i have to be in the mood! sometimes when i feel like designing a single piece of jewelry, it leads into much more. usually on the weekends is when i have most time to create. i will stay in my pajamas all day and whip out a dozen pieces or so — as long as everything out, why would i only make one?

what is it about jewelry that makes someone feel so fabulous? what people wear to accessorize tells so much about them. jewelry can describe
your personality, your mood, and the way you want to be represented! jewelry
can dress anything up, or totally transform an outfit.

any advice to other young, aspiring designers? do not let your age be a deterrent — i started when i was extremely young — and just continue to stand behind your brand and get the word out!  everything takes time and patience, but if you have a positive mindset and keep working hard. you will be surprised at how much can go your way!
