has street style photography created a new unattainable ideal for women?

fashionista recently raised this important question, which i felt compelled to bring over here to this blog to do the same and ask you of your thoughts: have the photos we see all over street style blogs during fashion month and beyond give you a certain vision of the body type/style/overall look of women in the fashion industry? as one such woman, i say “yes.” yes, it does. if i wasn’t working where i am and didn’t see a variety of shapes and sizes on a daily basis in one of the most famous publishing houses in the world, i would absolutely think that every powerful fashion-minded female was tall, thin and terribly well-dressed. this isn’t the first time that i harped on this issue and it won’t be the last, but it is important for you all to know that we, the non-size 2, do exist.

some examples:

feel free to add your own names to this list. i’d love to know your thoughts.

  1. nadiathinks answered: i agree and thank you for the list of awesome women!
  2. passionanddevotion answered: I agree, and it seems like a lot of styles are geared towards women with long legs and thin figures
  3. claye-with-an-e answered: I definitely agree with you on this. Sarah Burton is another woman who does not look like the “type” of the fashion industry.

  10. fattypolitic answered: Of course it does- especially as someone aging/fat- I almost never see anyone I can identify with in the fashion world.
